Description

Live green brain coral (Goniastrea) under water. Most corals consist of many small polyps living together in a colony. One full polyp in the center is shown with four surrounding polyps. Walled corallites (skeleton of a polyp) are purple. All color is the natural autofluorescence of the coral with the exception of the purple, which is near-violet LED illumination that is used to highlight near- transparent tissue. Fifth Prize, 2011 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition®.
