Description

A live amoeba treated with the membrane-binding vital dye FM4-64 which stains the plasma membrane, contractile vacuole and other organelles. Large membrane-bounded organelles are excluded from the broad, thin, lamellipodium as the cell extends a pseudopod toward the upper left. Live cells were observed with a Zeiss Axiovert 135 fluorescence microscope. Electronic imaging of fluorescent specimens was performed using a Photometrics cooled, charge-coupled device (CCD) camera (PXL-1400) controlled with IPLab Spectrum 3.1P software (Scanolytics, Fairfax, VA) on Macintosh computers.
