Description

Adult Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) nematode imaged by DIC (differential interference contrast) microscopy. The angle of light allows for the visualization of many of the tissues in this living transparent animal. The head is at the top of the image pointing to the left. The large cuboidal cells in the center of the animal are unfertilized oocytes. The visibly twisting tube leading down towards the tail is the gut or intestine. This animal is alive and would have likely crawled away after this image was taken.
